Powell River,
Canada's men-only residential centre, built on meaning-centred therapy rather than the twelve steps, on nine oceanfront acres.
Sunshine Coast Health Centre is a family-owned, men-only residential mental health and addiction centre on more than nine private oceanfront acres near Powell River, on British Columbia's upper Sunshine Coast. Its distinguishing feature is clinical rather than physical: it sets aside the twelve-step model in favour of meaning-centred therapy, a framework derived from Viktor Frankl's logotherapy and developed on site by its programme director, into which CBT, DBT, EMDR, cognitive processing therapy, narrative therapy, somatic work and hypnotherapy are organised. Treatment runs through an all-graduate counselling team with nursing on site around the clock, a dedicated medical withdrawal unit, on-site psychiatry and rTMS for treatment-resistant depression. Clients keep their phones and laptops and there is a business centre, which makes it unusually workable for executives and owners. Aftercare is lifetime and included. The clinic admits male clients exclusively and describes itself as the only men's-only programme of its kind in Canada, which is a deliberate clinical position and the single most important qualifier on every score here.
Assessed: The clinic has a full assessment in this edition: all ten criteria scored, each with its reasoning, its sources with capture dates, and the gaps we could not close. It does not mean every fact is confirmed. How well the evidence holds up is shown by the confidence rating. What our labels mean
A fully named team page with credentials across roughly 75 staff, covering medical services, nursing, clinical services, health and wellness, client and alumni services, administration and operations.

No CPSBC, BCCNM, BCACC or BCCSW registration number is published for any clinician. Register lookups for the roster are open: 22 need an interactive session and one needs a person.
Typically 3 to 10 days
Within the residential rate, not separately published
Delivered in a dedicated Medical Services area with two private medical withdrawal suites, a medication dispensary and a nursing station, which the clinic describes as one of the few dedicated medical areas in a Canadian residential mental health centre. Physician supervised, with nursing cover around the clock and psychiatric evaluation on entry.
Minimum 30 days after withdrawal, typically 30 to 90
-
The core offer. An individually written plan organised by meaning-centred therapy, combining one-to-one counselling with daily group work, medical and psychiatric care, fitness and nutrition input, weekly massage, and structured afternoon and weekend recreation on and off the campus.
30 to 90 days
-
A dedicated track for first responders, military personnel, veterans and workers carrying duty-related trauma, using cognitive processing therapy, EMDR and somatic work alongside the meaning-centred spine, with established funder and disability-insurer pathways.
30 to 90 days
-
Built for executives, owners, entrepreneurs and skilled professionals. Personal devices are permitted in private bedrooms, a business centre with printing and strong cellular coverage is provided, and addiction, mental health, trauma and PTSD are treated together rather than in sequence, so a client can keep a business running while in treatment.
Within a residential stay
Not separately published
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment-resistant depression, delivered in the Cliffside building. It is unusual to find this modality inside a private residential addiction centre rather than in a hospital or a standalone neuromodulation clinic.
Family work during the stay, alumni support ongoing
Included in the cost of treatment
A family intake questionnaire, family counselling and family education work the household alongside the client's stay. After discharge every alumnus keeps coaching, weekly support groups, phone and text support around the clock, alumni events and a defined re-admission route.
No public price found.
The review base is credible and adequately sized, with no clustering, no implausible perfection and a normal spread of critical entries. Employer review sites carry a smaller volume of staff, not client, commentary, mixed in tone; they are recorded because they are the only substantial negative signal in the public record other than the 2016 client death set out below. No lawsuit, licence restriction or regulatory sanction was found.

No lawsuit, licence restriction or regulatory sanction was found.
The central item in the clinic's public record is a client death on site on 7 March 2016 from a mixed opioid overdose, and it is set out here in date order and without naming anyone. Vancouver Coastal Health investigated and found that the facility had complied with licensing regulations. Global News reported on 14 November 2016 that medical health officers' report found staff did not contravene the Community Care Act or its regulations, and that a third-party review commissioned by the clinic also cleared it. On 25 January 2017 a BC Coroners Service inquest jury returned a verdict of accidental death from mixed opioid overdose and made 21 recommendations, one directed at the clinic's chief executive to review security procedures and training with all staff, and others to all licensed substance use treatment centres, including that facilities search all baggage and review cellphone and electronic-device policies. The facility stated that the jury's recommendations were already in place. The death and the inquest were covered nationally in 2016 and 2017. No breach of client confidentiality by the facility was found. The consequence for discretion is nonetheless factual: a client's stay and the circumstances of his death became public through the inquest and national coverage.
Certified B Corporation since 2018 and Better Business Bureau accredited since 2014. No independently adjudicated clinical award was found.
A private oceanfront campus of over nine acres at 2174 Fleury Road, north of Powell River, looking west over the Georgia Strait toward Vancouver Island. A dedicated Medical Unit handles withdrawal management, medical and psychiatric assessment and medication administration, with two private medical withdrawal suites and a nursing station giving cover around the clock. The main clinical building holds one-to-one counselling and group therapy rooms. The Cliffside building carries rTMS, integrated healthcare and further counselling rooms. A waterfront fitness centre looks directly onto the Pacific. Accommodation is private bedrooms with shared bathrooms and wireless internet, and personal devices are permitted in rooms; a private room but not a private bathroom is the clearest gap against luxury peers. Grounds and amenities include an indoor pool, a TV lounge, a multipurpose room, a basketball court on the bluff, private beach access, outdoor patios with firepits, gardens, a kitchen and dining area, and business stations with printing and strong cellular signal.
The clinic states it serves healthy meals to restore nutrition, wellbeing and health, and lists nutrition consultation as part of integrated healthcare. A hormone health specialist with nutrition credentials sits on the wellness team, and a kitchen and dining area is published among the facility amenities. Not published: any named chef, any registered dietitian on the roster, any dietary or micronutrient testing, and any personalised nutrition programme. On this rubric that reads as competent institutional catering with nutrition support available, not a culinary programme.
shared setting
Against the project's three readings of client separation, this clinic meets none. It does not offer one-to-one-only therapy, single occupancy per residence, or no client contact. What does exist: private bedrooms, a men-only client group, a remote site reachable by ferry or floatplane, free travel arrangement including a staff companion at Vancouver terminals, and a published privacy policy. Baggage is searched on arrival, and the clinic explicitly prohibits cavity searches, skin searches and pat-downs, framing that in dignity terms. Three things cap the position. The model: up to 30 men on site at once, with group therapy as a core modality, shared bathrooms, communal lounges, a shared pool and dining room, and off-site outings, so clients see each other constantly by design. Devices: clients keep phones and laptops and a business centre is provided, which is a real commercial differentiator and is also structurally incompatible with controlled anonymity, since the facility does not control what leaves the building. And the public record of the 2016 client death, set out in the press note.
Headline basis: Public evidenceThe headline number is the public score, not the extended score., LROAS 1.0.0, edition 2026-10-01
Public-evidence total: 45
The sum of the ten criterion scores, from 10 to 100, using evidence anyone can check, including the clinic's own pages as self-declared statements. For the licence element of C2 only, it can also use an authority ruling held in our sealed evidence room. It is the only number used for the rank.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium. ProvisionalA check was still open when the edition closed, for example a register lookup or a video not yet received, or evidence under embargo.: C10.
All bedrooms are private, but bathrooms, the kitchen and dining area and other facilities are shared, and daily group therapy brings clients together on one campus. Clients keep phones and laptops, and the bag search on arrival is a safety measure, so no confidentiality measure beyond statute is published and band 4 is not reached. The occupancy model is stated consistently across the clinic's pages, so no deduction applies and the band is 3.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: low
The Accreditation Canada list for July 2026 carries the Powell River site at 2174 Fleury Road under Sunshine Coast Health Centre (2005) Ltd., and the Vancouver Coastal Health licensing register lists the facility as a substance use facility at that address. A physician Medical Director is named, and on-site withdrawal management is delivered in the Medical Unit. Licensing, a medical lead and two further elements (on-site withdrawal, accreditation) give band 6. Nursing is present around the clock but no physician or psychiatrist night cover is established, no escalation hospital is named, and no non-psychiatric medical service or complex psychiatry programme is published, so band 7 is not reached.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
Three diagnostic elements are met: medical and psychiatric assessments form the basis of treatment plans, with assessment and diagnosis, withdrawal management and medication management listed. Admission runs through application forms handled by admissions staff, with no pre-arrival clinical screening described. No laboratory work, specialist diagnostics, instrument set or written formulation for the client is published, so the band above is not reached.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
The published minimum is one individual counselling session a week against daily group therapy facilitated by a group of counsellors, so more than half of clinical hours are delivered in groups. The clinical team is pooled rather than dedicated, and nursing cover is on the campus rather than in each client's residence. The staff ratio of three staff per client on the home page is not a dedicated team. This gives band 3.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: low
Five aftercare elements are met: alumni coordinators reachable around the clock, facilitated weekly and fortnightly groups, in-person coaching in several Canadian cities, a formal re-admission process, and aftercare included in the cost of treatment. Five elements give band 6. Support is open-ended with no defined period of structured contact, so the higher bands are not reached.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
The sweep of the clinic's own domains found no ranking page, no paid recognition presented as independent and no AI-directed text. Labelled press releases from 2021 and 2022 describe the clinic as top-rated without a source; this is recorded, not scored as a violation. One positive signal counts: the FAQ states that unmotivated clients are referred to programmes with stricter controls. No price is published, no referral-fee position is published, and no voluntary-admission statement is made, so a clean sweep with one signal gives band 5.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
Two transparency elements are met: the privacy policy states a seven-year records retention period and names the governing privacy statutes, and a dedicated licensing page states the regulator and accreditor. No fee inclusions, refund, cancellation, extension or early-departure terms are published, the licence is named without a number and the accreditation link goes to the accreditor's home page, the legal entity and ownership are not stated on the clinic's pages, no complaints procedure naming an external body is published, and inspection results are not linked. Two elements with no contradiction give band 3.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
No final adverse regulator, court or tribunal finding against the operator was found. The Vancouver Coastal Health licensing register records routine inspections on 2 March 2022, 14 April 2023, 26 April 2024 and 5 November 2025, the latest with every item in compliance, no contraventions and no action required. A regulator inspection within five years plus a clean inspection within three years gives band 7. No bylined first-hand reporting from inside the facility and no second independent review platform were found, so the band above is not reached.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: high
Environment and safety counts six published elements, including a Medical Unit, a fitness centre, over nine acres with beach access, a medication intake and prescription review process, a licensed-address record for 2174 Fleury Road, and an emergency department at qathet General Hospital estimated at 17 minutes and 13.5 km by road. The sub-band is held at 6 because no therapy room standard is published. Nutrition reaches 4 and is capped because no qualified nutrition professional leads the plan; a team member with nutrition credentials is named. The mean of 6 and 4 gives band 5.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
The team page publishes a roster including a Medical Director MB ChB, a psychiatrist FRCP(C), a Nursing Director RPN and a Registered Psychologist as Clinical Director. The facility licence is proven through the Accreditation Canada list, so the two physicians hold provisionally verified credentials. The remaining register lookups are still open, so only isolated registered professionals are confirmed, which gives band 2.
ProvisionalA check was still open when the edition closed, for example a register lookup or a video not yet received, or evidence under embargo.: Clinician register lookups for this criterion were still open at the edition cut-off (see known_gaps). The points count as assessed on the evidence available; the band may change when the lookups are completed, which is resolved in a later edition.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
Not published. The clinic's fees page carries no figure and routes every enquiry to its admissions coordinators by telephone. No price is carried in this profile because no clinic figure and no archived source exists for one. Scholarships are available and have their own page. The clinic works with most Canadian extended-health insurers and can arrange direct billing or reimbursement, payment can be split across cards and wire transfers, and Canadian clients may be able to claim up to CAD 10,000 of the cost on a personal tax return.
The centre sits on more than nine private oceanfront acres at 2174 Fleury Road, just outside Powell River on British Columbia's upper Sunshine Coast, looking west across the Georgia Strait to Vancouver Island. It is remote by design: reaching it from Vancouver means a floatplane or a road-and-ferry combination. The clinic arranges travel at no charge, including pickups from Vancouver International Airport, and provides a staff companion to meet clients at Vancouver terminals.
Men only, and the clinic is explicit that many clients choose it precisely because no female clients are present. Within that it runs three tracks: general mental health and addiction, occupational trauma and PTSD for first responders, military personnel and veterans, and an executive programme for executives, business owners, entrepreneurs and skilled tradespeople. The executive track is unusual in permitting personal phones and laptops in private bedrooms and providing a business centre, so a client can keep a company running while in treatment.
Three steps, and no doctor's referral is needed: a short registration form, a full intake completed with admissions staff, then travel to Powell River. The centre operates open intake, so clients start whenever a bed is free rather than waiting for a cohort, and it states that most clients are admitted immediately or within one to two weeks if there is a waiting list. Clients bring only a three-day supply of medication in original packaging; prescriptions are reassessed on arrival by the medical director. All bags are searched, but cavity searches, skin searches and pat-downs are prohibited.
Aftercare is included and is not an upsell. Every alumnus keeps access to coaching, weekly alumni support groups, phone and text support around the clock and alumni events, plus a defined re-admission route with its own form if a further stay is needed. In-person coaching is offered in several Canadian cities. The clinic also runs family services and a family intake questionnaire so the household is prepared for the client's return. Minimum stay is 30 days after withdrawal management, and the clinic states that longer stays produce better outcomes.
