New Canaan,
An independent nonprofit psychiatric hospital on forty-four Connecticut acres that publishes every rate it charges.
Silver Hill publishes a complete, dated price list for every bed it operates, which almost nothing else in this ranking does. It is an independent, not-for-profit psychiatric hospital founded in 1931 on a 44-acre campus in New Canaan, about an hour from Manhattan, licensed by Connecticut as a hospital for psychiatric disabilities and accredited by The Joint Commission on three separate programmes. It runs the full ladder of care in one place: acute inpatient units, named residential tracks housed in historic homes on the grounds, and outpatient programmes. The identity is medical rather than resort. Its physicians hold faculty appointments at several schools of medicine, and its executive house operates in formal collaboration with a university health system. Care is delivered in groups, in shared houses, by design.
Assessed: The clinic has a full assessment in this edition: all ten criteria scored, each with its reasoning, its sources with capture dates, and the gaps we could not close. It does not mean every fact is confirmed. How well the evidence holds up is shown by the confidence rating. What our labels mean
The hospital publishes a staff directory of 105 named people, an executive team of ten and 95 clinical and support staff, each linking to a profile page. It states its physician team includes 21 psychiatrists, all board certified in adult psychiatry, and four physicians holding doctorates.

State the provenance plainly: the three biggest numbers in circulation are largely the same reviews counted three times, because the Google base reappears inside an aggregator profile and inside a commercial directory figure. The honest read is one substantial base of about 134 Google reviews plus 45 on a consumer platform. The aggregator profile is unclaimed by the business. The body of reviews reads as genuine and unmanaged: volume is high, the rating is mediocre rather than glowing, negative reviews are present and visible, and there is no sign of seeding. That is a credibility positive and a satisfaction negative at the same time. Employer review sites carry a further volume of staff, not client, commentary, recorded here so it is not mistaken for a client signal.

The hospital has been covered continuously in national US media for nine decades, partly because of press reporting on public figures treated there; no client is named in this profile. Its clinicians are also quoted as subject-matter experts, and national titles carried hospital physicians during 2026. A June 2025 gift of USD 5.5 million was reported as the largest in the institution's history. On the litigation record: a client admitted in January 2018 died by suicide at the hospital on 17 February 2018. Local reporting on 11 November 2019 stated that the estate had sued the hospital in Connecticut state court in October 2019, alleging failures of monitoring; the allegations were reported, not adjudicated. Reporting on 25 November 2019 stated that the state health department had reopened its investigation of the death, with no findings or final outcome recorded in any source reviewed. Reporting in November 2024 stated that the suit had settled on undisclosed terms, ending the case without a court finding. For completeness, in June 2002 the hospital entered a settlement with the US Department of Justice under the Americans with Disabilities Act concerning effective communication for deaf and hard-of-hearing clients; it is twenty-four years old and is recorded rather than weighted.
Accreditation on three separate programmes is the substantive credential. No national psychiatry ranking entry was found for the hospital, and no independently adjudicated award.
Forty-four acres in the Silvermine River Valley, wooded and quiet, roughly an hour from Manhattan. Accommodation is distributed across named historic houses rather than a single block, including a 1913 English Tudor and a 1920s guesthouse. Each house typically has a large living room and a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, which gives the residential tracks a domestic rather than institutional character. Shared campus amenities include an on-site fitness centre with personal training, a large gymnasium, an indoor pool and a library with computer access. The grounds carry the Silvermine River, a pond with a small waterfall, a wildflower garden, a labyrinth and walking paths. The acute inpatient units are clinical in character and physically separate from the residential houses. The qualification that matters at this price point: shared rooms are the default on three of the residential tracks, and a private room is a published supplement that roughly doubles the programme cost. Private accommodation is standard only at three of the houses.
A dietitian is on staff and the hospital accommodates kosher, gluten-free and vegetarian requirements. The executive transitional living house has a private chef, which is the only chef-level catering the hospital advertises and is confined to that 8-bed house. General campus catering is contracted to a healthcare foodservice operator, which also runs the campus ordering system. Not published: any personalised nutrition protocol, any dietary or micronutrient testing programme, and any culinary credential outside the executive house. Kitchen hygiene falls under hospital accreditation standards and no hygiene finding appears in any source reviewed. This is competent institutional catering with one premium exception.
one to one therapy
Against the project's three readings of client separation, the hospital qualifies on the first and weakest: one-to-one therapy. Individual psychotherapy is delivered one clinician to one client, which is common and is weak evidence of privacy. It does not meet single occupancy per residence and does not come close to no client contact. Structurally this is a large hospital whose treatment model is group milieu therapy. Residents live together in shared houses, eat together in shared dining rooms and attend group programming together. Shared rooms are the default on three of the residential tracks, with a private room sold as a supplement that roughly doubles the price. Reception, the gymnasium, the indoor pool, the fitness centre, the library and the grounds are shared campus amenities. Client contact is designed in, not designed out. The 8-bed executive house is the best-isolated part of the campus, with private rooms and its own chef, but even there residents live alongside seven other people. Personal phones and computers are confiscated on the inpatient units and on the adolescent residential programme, which protects other residents from being photographed but does not protect a resident from being seen. Not published: any NDA policy, no-contact protocol or structural discretion guarantee; the hospital's own FAQ does not address confidentiality.
Headline basis: Public evidenceThe headline number is the public score, not the extended score., LROAS 1.0.0, edition 2026-10-01
Public-evidence total: 54
The sum of the ten criterion scores, from 10 to 100, using evidence anyone can check, including the clinic's own pages as self-declared statements. For the licence element of C2 only, it can also use an authority ruling held in our sealed evidence room. It is the only number used for the rank.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium. ProvisionalA check was still open when the edition closed, for example a register lookup or a video not yet received, or evidence under embargo.: C10.
The FAQ states that most rooms are designed as doubles, and the DBT-S house has single and double bedrooms with shared common areas plus skills groups and daily process groups, so shared bedrooms are the default and group work is core in every residential track. That occupancy model places the clinic in band 2 regardless of any client number. The private-room supplement on the rate card buys a private bedroom inside a shared house, not sole occupancy of a residence, so no uplift applies. No capacity deduction applies: the FAQ line on single rooms in two of six programmes and the rate card's three all-private houses describe room types, not capacity figures.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: low
The Connecticut Department of Public Health register lists Silver Hill Hospital, Inc. as a Hospital for Psychiatric Disabilities, licence H0006, active until 30 June 2027, with separate active residential mental health and substance abuse licences for Silver Hill Therapeutic Services, LLC. The President and Medical Director is a physician, the Lodge publishes psychiatrist cover nights and weekends, withdrawal is delivered on the hospital's own inpatient units, the hospital licence covers the setting, The Joint Commission lists the organisation as accredited under Hospital and Behavioral Health Care programmes, and a psychosis and mood programme is published. Licensing, a medical lead and five further elements give band 9. Band 10 would need a published non-psychiatric physician service, which is absent.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: high
Three diagnostic elements are published: a pre-admission clinical suitability review tied to a deposit refund, assessment by a psychiatrist and a social worker with appointments within 48 hours, and a psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and treatment plan on residential admission. Psychological testing is not a listed specialist diagnostic and adds no element. The rate card's exclusion of non-routine laboratory tests implies routine laboratory work but is not a published laboratory panel on or near admission, so it does not count. Three elements give band 5; a fourth element would be needed for band 6.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
The DBT-S track publishes at least four individual sessions a week plus seven or more skills groups and daily process groups; the Triumph trauma track publishes individual therapy three times weekly plus a weekly psychiatric appointment. The clinical team is pooled, one programme team per house, and more than half of scheduled clinical hours are delivered in groups. That intensity gives band 4. The group-share cap at band 6 applies but has no effect at band 4, and round-the-clock nursing does not count as a dedicated clinician per residence.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
Discharge planning begins on day one with the client and family, programme pages describe preliminary discharge plans and coordination with outpatient teams, and the rate card prices Care Navigation Support Services (three-month minimum) and an intensive outpatient programme delivered by the hospital's own clinicians. Seven aftercare elements are met, giving band 8. Psychiatric follow-up by the hospital itself and six months or more of structured contact are not published, so the band above is not reached.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
A sweep of the hospital's domains found no self-ranking pages ranking other clinics, no paid recognition presented as independent press or award, and no text addressed to AI systems (/llms.txt returned HTTP 404). Two positive signals count: a dated rate card with whole-programme prices per track, and a refund position tied to clinical suitability rather than to the sale. A clean sweep with two positive signals gives band 6. No referral-fee position is published, so a further signal is missing.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
Six transparency elements are met: inclusions and exclusions, deposit and refund terms, extension daily rates and early-departure fees on the dated rate card, a named covered entity and contracting entity with the campus address, a complaints route naming the federal Office for Civil Rights, and a stated regulatory status. The site states the licence category without a licence number or register link, no retention period is published, the regulator's inspection documents are not linked by the hospital, and ownership is not matched to a corporate register record. Six elements give band 7, and one point is deducted because a superseded 2018 deposit policy still hosted on the domain gives different fees and early-departure terms, giving band 6.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
The federal statement of deficiencies for the survey concluded on 2 September 2025, on the Connecticut register, finds that the hospital failed to provide adequate supervision to prevent self-harm, that a client attempted suicide as a result and later died, and that Immediate Jeopardy was identified; it was removed on 31 July 2025 and a plan of correction was accepted on 6 November 2025. A final finding that supervision failures contributed to a client's death, within five years, places the clinic in band 2. Earlier surveys in 2017, 2019 and 2020 cited unmet Conditions of Participation without stating that failures contributed to a death, and they do not change the band. Litigation and reported allegations without a final adverse finding are recorded, not scored.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: high
Environment and safety counts five elements for band 6: grounds and a gym on a 44-acre campus, facilities and community programming, visiting arrangements, a hospital emergency department at Norwalk Hospital estimated at 14 minutes and 8.3 km by road, and a state register entry placing the licences at 208 Valley Road. Nutrition counts two elements for band 4, a dietitian and dietary accommodations, and no named nutrition professional is published, which caps nutrition at 5 without effect. C9 is the mean of 6 and 4, giving band 5. Published risk assessments and further safety elements are absent.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: high
The Connecticut published licence API confirms the facility licence and, on the same register, 18 physicians, 7 psychologists, 1 registered nurse, 2 advanced practice registered nurses and 36 further registered clinicians; a university faculty page confirms the Director of Psychology as a professor of psychiatry. Relevant specialist governance and this depth give band 7 with all gate conditions met. The band rests on a margin of 0.01 index points, so the band above is not reached.
ProvisionalA check was still open when the edition closed, for example a register lookup or a video not yet received, or evidence under embargo.: Clinician register lookups for this criterion were still open at the edition cut-off (see known_gaps). The points count as assessed on the evidence available; the band may change when the lookups are completed, which is resolved in a later edition.
ConfidenceHow well the evidence supports the score.: medium
The hospital publishes its rates in full in a dated rate card revised 17 March 2025. Inpatient hospital care is USD 2,520 per day, with a USD 17,640 deposit for a psychiatric admission and USD 12,600 for an addiction admission. Residential programmes are priced whole: USD 59,136 for 28 days on the DBT-S or Resilience tracks, USD 87,360 for 28 days at the executive house, USD 70,000 for the 35-day adolescent programme, USD 88,200 for the 42-day neuropsychiatric programme and USD 226,800 for the 84-day trauma programme. A private room roughly doubles the price on the tracks where it is optional. Medications, non-routine laboratory tests and a USD 5,520 trauma track are billed on top. A USD 5,000 reservation deposit applies, of which USD 1,000 is non-refundable, and an early voluntary discharge fee of up to USD 5,000, or USD 10,000 on the private-room and executive tracks, applies when a client leaves before the programme ends.
A 44-acre campus at 208 Valley Road, New Canaan, Connecticut, in the wooded Silvermine River Valley about an hour north of Manhattan. Accommodation sits in named historic houses spread across the grounds rather than in a single hospital block, alongside an indoor pool, a fitness centre, a gymnasium, a library, a labyrinth and walking paths beside the river. Fairfield County is among the safest and wealthiest parts of the United States, and New York's specialist medicine is within easy reach if it is needed.
Adults and adolescents who need genuine hospital-level psychiatric or addiction care rather than a retreat: suicidality, psychosis, severe mood disorder, complex trauma and dissociation, eating disorders, medically managed withdrawal and treatment-resistant illness that needs rediagnosis. Within that, the executive transitional living house is reserved for executives, professionals and people running large organisations, in an 8-bed house with private rooms, a private chef and university health system involvement. It is not built for someone whose first requirement is never being seen.
Admission begins with a call or email to the evaluation centre, where a nurse or social worker completes a phone intake and schedules an assessment. A psychiatrist is on site 24 hours a day, every day of the year, so urgent inpatient admission can move quickly. The assessment programme offers appointments within 48 hours, with assessment by a psychiatrist and a social worker and personalised referral information for next steps. Residential admission requires a USD 5,000 reservation deposit against a dated admission, of which USD 1,000 is non-refundable, and the deposit rules contemplate rescheduling. The hospital publishes no waiting-time figure.
The hospital runs a priced, case-managed aftercare product billed monthly at USD 1,500, USD 3,000 or USD 4,500 for 10, 20 or 30 hours of service, with a three-month minimum. It also operates an intensive outpatient programme at USD 605 per session, USD 14,520 for the 24-session course, which is in-network with many insurers, plus ongoing outpatient therapy. Clinical staff work with the client and family from day one to build the plan for life after discharge, which may include further residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, or appointments with the client's own physicians and therapists. Clients can therefore step down through the same institution and the same clinicians rather than being handed off at the gate.
