About Crossroads Centre Antigua

Crossroads Centre Antigua is a non-profit residential addiction centre on the shore of Willoughby Bay, on the windward south-eastern coast of Antigua. It was opened by the musician Eric Clapton with Richard Conte and remains the only drug rehabilitation programme on the island. The clinical model is a structured twelve-step residential programme modelled on the Betty Ford Center, with cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, EMDR and trauma work layered over it, and yoga, acupuncture, massage, fitness and dietitian-led nutrition around it. Psychiatry is delivered by telemedicine rather than in person. Residential stays run from 30 to 90 days with treatment plans reassessed every two weeks, and a standalone medically managed withdrawal programme runs 7 to 10 days. The regime is strict: phones, computers, cameras and musical instruments are prohibited during treatment, and clients are limited to three ten-minute calls a week. Clients typically spend the withdrawal period in a private room where one is available, then move to a double-occupancy room once medically stable, so shared accommodation is the standard rather than the exception. CARF International accredits the centre for Residential Treatment and for Residential Detoxification and Withdrawal Management; no Antigua and Barbuda facility licence, licence class or registration number could be retrieved from any public register, and no register of licensed treatment facilities appears to be published in that jurisdiction. The live website publishes no price, but the centre's own admissions package, still hosted on its own server, prints USD 27,000 for the 29-day residential programme and USD 34,875 for six weeks. That document is undated in its text and its file path dates the upload to 2014, so whether the figures are current is not established.

Clinic overview

Founded
Two years are recorded. A Clapton-affiliated FAQ dates the decision to found the centre to 1997; Rolling Stone, the Crossroads Guitar Festival about page and the encyclopaedic record date the opening to October 1998. Recorded as unresolved.
Capacity
Three figures are recorded and none comes from the clinic's own pages or a register: a 36-bed design (encyclopaedic record and a Clapton-affiliated FAQ), 35 beds (a 2005 University of the West Indies study) and 16 to 30 beds (a third-party listing). Current operating occupancy is not published.
Languages
The treatment programme is delivered in English. Clinical outreach liaisons are maintained for the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain and Sweden, but no further language capability is published.
Accreditations
CARF International, first accredited 2015, currently holding Three-Year Accreditation for Residential Treatment (Behavioral Health, substance use disorders, adults) and for Detoxification and Withdrawal Management, Residential. The centre is also listed as a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, which is a trade association rather than an accreditor.
Payment and insurance
No carrier list and no in-network relationships are published. A named document review and insurance quality assurance coordinator is on staff, which indicates claims are handled, but nothing is stated. Full payment must clear before admission regardless of any later reimbursement. UnverifiedStated by the clinic, not yet confirmed by an independent source
Length of stay
Residential stays run 30 to 90 days, structured as 30, 42, 56 or 90 days with weekly extensions, and treatment plans are reassessed every two weeks. Standalone medically managed withdrawal runs a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of 10.

Our assessment

The verifiable review base is small but credible. A Google Business Profile recorded 4.3 out of 5 from 22 reviews in September 2026, and a third-party listing reported 4.2 out of 5 from 24 reviews, close to the Google figure and consistent with it. The two are recorded separately and not averaged. No Trustpilot listing was located. The Facebook page has over 6,100 followers and actively solicits alumni reviews, which is a provenance point to note when reading the base. Neither the Google profile nor the Facebook page could be captured with owner responses or visible negative reviews, so neither counts as verifiable independent testimony in the score. No clustering, no implausible perfection and no manipulation signal was found. For a centre open 28 years with a substantially international caseload, 22 Google reviews is a thin base, and it is thin because this clientele does not review its treatment publicly. One unusual credibility signal sits outside the review platforms. A peer-reviewed University of the West Indies comparison study by Martin TC and colleagues, published in 2005, describes the centre as a 35-bed, 29-day residential centre serving clients from developed countries and the Caribbean. A private treatment centre appearing as the subject of an independent academic study is rare. No lawsuit, licence action or regulatory sanction against the centre was found, and no statutory inspection of the site by an Antigua regulator is on record.

Coverage is extensive but almost entirely refracted through the founder. Rolling Stone covered the centre's early financial difficulty and the Christie's auctions of art and guitars held for its benefit. The 2026 Crossroads Guitar Festival is staged explicitly for the centre's benefit and is billed as marking its 28th year. One former client's stay in 2005 was reported internationally. No first-hand bylined reporting from inside the facility was found within the last five years: an Antigua Observer item about a recovery conference hosted at the centre returned HTTP 403 and is an event notice rather than reporting from inside. The centre has no newsroom, no press page and no media contact.

Facility

A low-rise beachfront campus on Willoughby Bay, on the windward south-eastern coast of Antigua near Saint Philip's, roughly 30 to 40 minutes from V.C. Bird International Airport, where a Crossroads driver collects arriving clients. Accommodation. Clients typically spend the withdrawal period in a private room where one is available, then move to a double-occupancy room once medically stable. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, shower and private verandah. Special room assignment requests are not granted. Residential buildings, group rooms and offices are air-conditioned. Washer, dryer and ironing facilities are free, towels and linen are supplied, and the electrical current is 110 volts. A gift shop on site sells toiletries and recovery literature, and a USD 25 administration fee applies to any off-premises purchase or special delivery. Grounds and amenities. Ocean views, beach access, a private pool, outdoor and seaside recreation space, fitness and yoga facilities, and a designated outdoor smoking area, with all buildings non-smoking. The beachfront itself is reachable only on staff-accompanied walks. What is not established. Despite a tour page headed as a photo tour, no accommodation, pool, beach or grounds photography could be retrieved from it. No emergency department is named and no road travel time to one is published by the clinic or any register. The physical plant dates from 1998 and no recent refurbishment is documented in the public record.

Food

Better evidenced than most. A registered dietitian holding an MBA and the RD credential sits on the permanent staff roster, and the residential programme explicitly includes nutritional counselling and a customised meal plan with a dietitian. A nutritional evaluation is listed among the assessments on admission, and nutritional assessment is listed among the services offered during medically managed withdrawal. Meals are included in the fee and are treated as scheduled programme activities that clients are required to attend, which is a clinical rather than a hospitality framing. Individual nutritional requests are evaluated by the clinical and medical teams, and the centre states that every effort will be made to accommodate them. No chef is named anywhere in the public record, and there is no gourmet credential and no named kitchen leadership. Who carries out the nutritional assessment is not stated, the method behind the meal plan is not published, and it is not published that the kitchen works to the plan. Monitoring during the stay, condition-specific protocols and nutrition education for after discharge are not published.

Privacy

shared setting

What is established, and it is unusually specific. The centre's own admissions package instructs arriving clients to tell the Antigua Immigration Officer that they are coming to Crossroads, so that the correct length of stay is granted and the Crossroads driver can be admitted to the customs security area. The same document states that if a client leaves treatment early, the Immigration Department will be notified. A foreign government's border service is told, by written policy, that a named individual is entering addiction treatment, with a further notification pathway if that individual leaves. This is documented by the clinic itself rather than alleged by anyone else. Double occupancy is the standard. Clients share a bedroom once medically stable and cannot request otherwise, and the model is twelve-step group work with on-site AA and NA meetings, mandatory shared meals, a five-day family intensive held on campus and an alumni retreat programme that brings former clients back to the site. The founder is one of the most photographed musicians alive, the centre carries his story in its own marketing, and an alumni festival in his name generates recurring international coverage tied to the building. Genuine strengths, against all that. The device policy is among the strictest in this ranking: televisions, computers, phones, cameras, musical instruments, radios and video games are all prohibited, and personal work material of any kind is banned. Reception staff will neither confirm nor deny the presence of anyone at the facility. Confidentiality is a written ground rule with disciplinary force, visitors sign a confidentiality statement, and family programme accommodation is separate from client rooms.

C1 Client separation and occupancy · 2

The band rests on the occupancy model only; no bed count is used. The 2014 admissions package places clients in a semi-private room once medically stable, with private rooms only at additional cost and subject to availability, on one shared campus. Group therapy is core to the programme and meals are scheduled activities that must be attended. No sole-occupancy tier exists and the clinic's statements on the model do not contradict each other, so no deduction applies.

C2 Clinical governance and medical cover · 7

CARF's own register lists a Three-Year Accreditation for residential treatment and residential withdrawal management at 3952 Willoughby Bay, which serves as the register record since no public Antigua facility register exists. A physician medical director is named, an on-call physician and 24-hour medical care on site are stated, and withdrawal is medically managed on site. With the accreditor entry that is three further elements, band 7. Band 8 needs a fourth: no named hospital escalation route, no non-psychiatric physician service and no complex-psychiatry programme are published.

Three elements are published: a psychiatric evaluation by telemedicine, a documented physician evaluation with physical examination within 24 hours of admission, and physician review of all medications. Three elements are met, all from admissions packages dated 2013 and 2014: fee inclusions, deposit and refund terms, and a statement of limits (telemedicine psychiatry, alcohol and drug dependence only). That would be band 4, but one point is deducted because both packages are still hosted on the clinic's server and give different fee terms on room assignment and the medical refund period (three weeks against two). The criterion is the mean of a health and safety sub-band of 6 and a nutrition sub-band of 4, which is 5. Health and safety meets seven elements: clinical and medical care on one campus with exercise space, substance and medication controls, residence staff, family visiting, and a 24-hour hospital about 19 minutes by road, derived by Leading Rehabs from the CARF-recorded site address. Frequently asked questions

What does treatment at Crossroads Centre Antigua cost?

The live website publishes no price, describing rates only as affordable and inclusive of treatment, accommodation, the family programme, meals, transport and aftercare support. The prices come from the centre's own admissions package, still hosted on its server: USD 27,000 for the 29-day residential programme and USD 34,875 for six weeks, plus a USD 500 refundable medical deposit and a USD 500 non-refundable deposit to hold a bed. That works out at roughly USD 6,500 a week. A third-party listing reports a different range that does not reconcile with the clinic's own document, and it is not adopted here. The admissions package is undated in its text and its file path dates the upload to 2014, so whether these figures are still current is not established. Scholarships and discounts are funded through the associated charitable foundations, and the family programme page states that scholarships and discounts are provided to those who cannot afford the full cost.

Where is it and how do you get there?

The centre sits on the shore of Willoughby Bay near Saint Philip's, on the windward south-eastern coast of Antigua, roughly 30 to 40 minutes from V.C. Bird International Airport, where a Crossroads driver collects arriving clients. The address, 3952 Willoughby Bay, is independently confirmed in CARF's provider register. Everyone entering Antigua needs a valid passport and an onward or return ticket. Be aware before you travel that the admissions package instructs clients to tell the immigration officer they are coming to Crossroads, so that the right length of stay is granted and the driver can meet them airside. Average temperatures run 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, and all residential and group buildings are air-conditioned.

Who is the centre designed for?

Adults with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions who want a structured twelve-step residential programme and can accept a device-free, rules-heavy environment. Mental health conditions are treated as co-occurring with a primary substance use disorder rather than as standalone admissions. The centre was founded specifically to make treatment of this standard affordable, and historically about 85 percent of clients came from developed countries, with the balance Caribbean residents admitted at reduced cost. It is the only rehabilitation programme on the island. It is not designed for anyone who needs to keep working, needs a private room, needs psychiatry delivered in person rather than by telemedicine, or needs their treatment kept from a border authority.

What is the admission process?

A telephone interview with an admissions counsellor, then a signed credit-card authorisation returned within 48 hours together with a USD 500 non-refundable deposit to secure the date. Full payment must clear before admission: cards are processed at least two business days ahead, certified cheques or money orders a day ahead, and wire transfers require written confirmation naming the sender. Clients bring a 45-day supply of prescribed medication in original packaging for review by medical staff, and anything judged contra-indicated is destroyed and not returned. All luggage is examined on arrival in the client's presence by two staff members. No waiting time is published anywhere; the 48-hour bed hold is the only documented timing mechanism.

What happens after discharge?

The residential programme page states a continuum of care for up to two years after discharge, included in the rates. Up to two years is a maximum rather than a defined period, and the format beyond alumni chapters, newsletters and retreats is not published. Clients leave with a recovery plan designed for their individual needs and, wherever possible, a support system at home. A lead counsellor aide holds the extended care coordinator role. Alumni chapters meet in Antigua, Florida, London, the Netherlands, New York, Toronto and Southern California, with Zoom alternatives, and the centre runs Renewal and Restore retreats on the campus. Psychiatric review and medication management after discharge are not published, and whether aftercare is delivered by the centre's own clinicians is not stated.
